AIM drain cleaning cable coiling, auger cable coiling equipment

Multi-Axis, CNC Drain Cleaning Cable Coiling Systems

Drain cleaning cable coiling is a unique wire-forming process that forms the key component of powered drain cleaning equipment, plumbing snakes, and sewer cleaning systems. The tools are based around auger cables, which must combine flexibility, rigidity, torque transmission, and long-cycle durability into a single product. A careful balance of properties is required for augers to navigate pipe bends while still delivering the strength needed to break through blockages.

Auger coiling presents a different set of challenges compared to standard springs: namely, coil lengths often exceed 100 feet, and spring indexes are extremely tight. Maintaining consistency over long, continuous runs is critical to field performance.

At Automated Industrial Motion, we build custom auger cable coiling machine systems.

Why drain cleaning cable manufacturing is challenging

Drain cleaning cables operate under torsional, compressive, and bending loads. During operation, the coil must transmit rotational torque (the turning force transmitted through the coil) as it rotates from the machine to the cutter head, all while remaining flexible enough to move through elbows, offsets, and changing pipe geometries.

That combination of requirements creates several manufacturing challenges, as outlined below:

Long coil lengths

Unlike many spring applications, plumbing augers are often produced in extremely long lengths. Maintaining pitch consistency, diameter control, and overall coil stability over 100-foot-plus runs requires a highly controlled coiling process.

Even small inconsistencies can impact key parameters, such as torque transmission, flexibility, resistance to kinking, and cable lifespan.

Small spring indexes

Plumbing snake coils commonly require very small spring indexes (the ratio between a spring’s coil diameter and the diameter of the wire used to make it) to maintain rigidity and resist deformation during use. Tight indexes improve torque transfer and durability, but they also increase forming difficulty during manufacturing.

This places greater demands on feed consistency, tooling stability, and process repeatability.

Fatigue and durability requirements

Drain cleaning cables are repeatedly subjected to a wider variety of forces than most coils. Rotational loading, compression, abrasion, and sudden shock loads are all expected as part of daily service for auger coils.

Drain cleaning cable coiling consistency directly impacts how well the finished cable handles these conditions in the field. Poorly controlled geometry, residual stress, or inconsistent coiling can contribute to premature fatigue, deformation, or cable failure.

AIM’s custom auger cable coiling equipment

AIM specializes in turn-key coiling systems that combine our state-of-the-art coiling machines with add-ons for automation and improved quality. Our team is experienced in developing custom coiling system designed specifically for drain snake auger coil production.

The system featured in this video includes:

  • AIM 1500 CNC coiler
  • Guillotine cutter
  • Exit chute
  • Integration capability for an in-line heat treat oven

This configuration is designed to support efficient, repeatable coil production for powered drain cleaning equipment, plumbing snakes, and sewer augers.

High-speed CNC coiling performance

The AIM 1500 shown here is capable of wire feed speeds up to 75 inches per second, allowing manufacturers to maintain productivity even on extremely long coil runs. Our other models vary depending on wire diameter capacity, but all operate at best-in-class speeds without sacrificing quality.

Because auger coils can be so long, throughput matters. Long production lengths can become bottlenecks if feed rates are too slow.

Our CNC spring coilers combine CNC-controlled repeatability with high feed speeds, while maintaining stable forming performance for consistent coil geometry.

CNC control matters in auger cable production

AIM 100 - CNC interfaceDrain snake auger coil manufacturing requires repeatability from run to run, especially when manufacturers are producing multiple cable styles, diameters, or lengths. CNC auger coiling equipment provides high levels of precision, repeatability, and ease of operation.

All AIM coiling machines include Windows-based PLC interfaces, providing easy setup and minute control over coil parameters.

Faster setup and changeover

Cassette tooling allows operators to move between jobs more efficiently while maintaining documented tooling positions.

For manufacturers producing multiple coil configurations, reducing setup time can significantly improve machine utilization and overall productivity.

Documented home sequences

Machine and part home sequences provide documented tooling positions for future reference. This helps manufacturers maintain consistency between production runs while reducing dependency on trial-and-error setup adjustments.

Reduced operator dependency

Our CNC coiling machines are fully calibrated prior to delivery and all tooling designs are documented in a comprehensive user manual. Operators of any skill level are able to use our equipment with minimal training.

Supporting the drain cleaning equipment industry

Manufacturers of drain cleaning equipment face increasing demands for cable durability, consistency, and production efficiency.

Companies must balance product performance with manufacturing throughput and repeatability, including producers of:

  • Powered drain cleaning equipment
  • Plumbing snakes
  • Sewer cleaning cables
  • Flexible auger systems
  • Specialty drain cleaning tools

Across the industry, we see continued demand for longer-lasting cables, better torque transmission, improved kink resistance, consistent production quality, and reduced downtime.

These requirements place increasing importance on manufacturing equipment capable of maintaining process consistency over long production runs. Our equipment is designed and produced to meet these needs.

Built for specialized coil manufacturing

Drain cleaning cable coiling machines are highly specialized equipment that demand tight process control, consistent geometry, and the ability to maintain rigidity over long coil lengths.

AIM’s custom CNC coiling systems are built specifically to solve these challenges.
